‘Must signing’ – Exclusive: McLeish reacts as Steven Gerrard reveals Rangers top priority
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that keeping Rangers midfielder Steven Davis past this season is a “must” for the Bears.
Steven Gerrard has recently claimed that keeping the Northern Ireland veteran has become his “top priority” this season.
Davis recently made his 300th appearance for the Bears and started once again the 5-0 victory against Ross County on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “He’s fit, he’s proved that now.
“He’s not getting any younger, but he’s shown through the doubt of some people. I can see why Steven Gerrard is talking about a new contract for him – I think he’s a must signing.
“Even if his legs do begin to go away, he’s still got a lot to offer in certain games, and also the influence he’s got on other players.”
Davis’ experience will always be key.
Not many in this current squad have tasted success with the Gers during their careers, and he will have been the driving force in the squad this season.
The 36-year-old won’t have expected as much playing time, but he has stepped up in the absence of both Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield recently.
Davis has started every game since the 4-0 win over Aberdeen in November, as he continues to prove his worth each week – a new contract must be around the corner.
