‘I know for sure that…’ – Jim White shares transfer update on Alfredo Morelos

Sky Sports journalist Jim White has claimed that Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos is attracting interest from a number of ‘top clubs’ in England.

Morelos has failed to fire for Steven Gerrard’s side this season and has only scored six times in 20 Scottish Premiership appearances, a far cry from the prolific 2018/19 campaign when he scored 18 in 30 while he managed 12 in 26 last season before the rest of the fixtures were cancelled after the worldwide pandemic.

He has come into a bit of form of late, however, with three goals in his last five, but he seems to have been affected by a failed move to Ligue 1 side Lille last summer.

In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Post White claims there are still elite level suitors in Morelos despite this downturn in form, saying: “There will be interest from many clubs in the EPL in a number of players in the SPFL.

“I know for sure that Alfredo Morelos and [Celtic striker] Odsonne Edouard have admirers in the top clubs down here.”

He added: “Clubs in England know there are really good players to be had in the Scottish Premiership.”

Time to say goodbye?

Few Rangers supporters envisage Morelos prolonging his future at Ibrox for many more years but White’s claim that there are top clubs in England still interested might be of some surprise.

There seemed to be no great desire from those clubs in the summer when Morelos was considered hot property so with the drying up of goals this season it seems strange for them to suddenly be considering a swoop for the Colombian.

If there is some credence to these rumours, however, then director of football Ross Wilson should be minded to drive up interest and force a bidding war between these clubs before moving Morelos on.

The 24-year-old has given Rangers four years of service and while there have been lapses of poor judgement he has still been a pretty consistent figure over this period and should be remembered fondly.

But the emergence of Kemar Roofe as a key man in the Gers attack has lessened the goal scoring onus on Morelos and he is no longer as integral to the side as he once was.

Cashing in on him in the summer might be the best thing for all parties.
