‘Dreamland’ – BBC Sportscene pundit baffled by one moment in Rangers win v Ross County

Neil McCann was baffled by how easily Filip Helander managed to score as Rangers won 5-0 against Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday.

Helander, 27, was gifted a free header to nod home a Borna Barisic corner in the first half after he managed to lose his marker.

Staggies defender Alex Iacovitti seemed to simply fall over while marking Helander and BBC Sportscene pundit McCann could not understand why unless he was trying to win a foul.

“I’m trying to look for a trip. We’re wondering whether he was trying to buy a free-kick because it was close contact but, whatever it is, he’s just fallen over,” McCann said on BBC Sportscene on Saturday.

“It’s absolute dreamland for Helander under no pressure.

“Brilliant delivery again from Barisic because without that delivery he doesn’t get that opportunity.

“But that will make big Yogi (John Hughes) cover his face when he’s watching the analysis back after that.”

Nice and easy does it

Ross County’s defence was all over the place at times on Saturday and that goal by Helander will probably be one of the easiest he will ever score.

As McCann said, Barisic’s delivery was exquisite but there’s no way defenders should be making it that easy for attackers to get up and win the ball.

Iacovitti seemed to know that he was being out-muscled by Helander as the Sweden international attacked Barisic’s corner but to buckle and fall over in the way he did was embarrassing. Hughes and Ross County fans will no doubt be furious with the 23-year-old defender.

It was a routine win for Rangers on Saturday but after the disappointment of the draw with Motherwell last week, that’s exactly what they needed.

Ross County have been poor all season and have the worst defensive record for a reason.

They really could go down this season but that doesn’t mean there’s time for sympathy from Rangers, nor is there time to take the foot off the gas.

We need to win the title this season and the sooner that happens, the better.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are in talks to sign this 24-year-old on a free transfer.
