‘The plan is…’ – McFadden claims there is clear path for Gerrard to leave Rangers for Liverpool
James McFadden has claimed that there is a clear path that leads to Rangers boss Steven Gerrard taking over at Liverpool in the near future.
Gerrard reached 150 games as Gers boss in record time on Saturday as a fantastic Light Blues performance earned a 5-0 win against Ross County at Ibrox.
With Gerrard succeeding at Rangers, there has been plenty of talk suggesting that he will return to his former club as manager in the near future and McFadden claims that this is the plan.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland (Via BBC Sport), McFadden said, “Overall, the job Steven Gerrard has done is magnificent.
“I think the plan is that his and Jurgen Klopp’s contracts end at the same time. I don’t see why he won’t be Liverpool manager if he continues to succeed.”
It is true that both Gerrard and Klopp’s respective contracts run out in 2024 and if both men want a new challenge then it could be the perfect time to move on.
While we doubt that there is an actual plan in place that will see Gerrard take over at Anfield in 2024 when Klopp’s current deal runs out, it does make an alarming amount of sense.
There are few jobs that Gerrard would probably take over managing Rangers but the big one is Liverpool and even if he is still at Rangers when Klopp leaves, he will find it hard to turn down.
Clubs in the Premier League appointing former players as managers have experienced varying degrees of success.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Manchester United battling at the top of the Premier League while Frank Lampard is fighting for his Chelsea future.
None of us want to see Gerrard leave any time soon but it seems inevitable that he will go to Liverpool at some point even if there isn’t an established plan.
Hopefully, Stevie G stays for as long as he can and continues to be successful, providing he sees the title return to Ibrox this season.
