‘I feared’ – Kris Boyd aims dig at Lennon as he details turning point for Gers

Kris Boyd revealed that he was worried about Steven Gerrard’s Rangers future following the team’s collapse last season.

The Gers started the 2019/20 season well but crumbled towards the end of the campaign, winning just four of their last ten games.

Since then there has been a remarkable turnaround with Rangers sitting pretty at the top of the table.

Boyd discussed that dip in form last season, how Gerrard was able to turn things around, and aimed a little dig at Neil Lennon.

He wrote in his column for the Scottish Sun, “It was a second defeat to Hearts — this time in the Scottish Cup — which left me wondering if Steven Gerrard’s reign was over.

“I feared he was going to walk away with regrets. Fast forward to today and he’s strolling away with the title.

“It just shows you how quickly football can turn round. Just ask Neil Lennon.

“I reckon lockdown was the best thing that could have happened for Gerrard. It allowed him space to go home to his family and reflect on where Rangers stood.

“It gave him time to speak with his backroom staff about what they needed to do to halt the slide.”

Tough mentality

Gerrard is clearly a natural winner.

His time at Liverpool proved that and the way he has transformed the club and our fortunes on the pitch shows he hasn’t lost that mentality.

After falling away last season despite such a strong showing for much of the year it would have been easy to lose faith, for both Gerrard and his players.

He refused to give up, however, and we look destined to win title number 55.

As Boyd points out, the lockdown may have done Stevie G the world of good, as it gave him time to reflect on the progress he had made as boss.

Astute summer additions such as Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun have improved both the attack and defence, conceding just six league goals.

Recent weeks have shown how difficult we are to beat, too, coming back to draw with Motherwell and beating Celtic despite not playing at our best.

That outlook has been fostered by Gerrard, and he has brilliantly handled the pressure to end Celtic’s title-winning streak, unlike Lennon.

In other Rangers news, the club must make a move for a player who resembles Joe Aribo.
