‘How can you keep a straight face’ – Chris Sutton rubbishes McCoist claim on Rangers bid for 55

Chris Sutton has sniggered at Ally McCoist’s suggestion that Rangers are yet to wrap up the Scottish Premiership and has ruled out a Celtic fightback.

The former Old Firm rivals are famous for trading light-hearted on-screen verbal blows at each other and it has been much of the same this season with Gers legend McCoist holding the upper hand such has been the dominance of Steven Gerrard’s side in this campaign.

Rangers are 20 points clear of Celtic with less than half of the season to go and remain unbeaten in their quest to end Hoops dreams of 10-in-a-row.

Rangers

Speaking on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra show [Episode 23, 22/01/21] McCoist attempted to play down title talk by saying: ” [10 in a row] is still alive by the way, you lot will all deny it, but Rangers haven’t won anything.”

Sutton was utterly dismissive of this notion, responding: “How can you keep a straight face?”

Rangers will have the chance to pull further clear at the top when they host Ross County on Saturday afternoon with Celtic not in action until January 27 against Hamilton.

Gers in cruise control

With such a lengthy lead at the top surely McCoist cannot still believe Celtic harbour any belief of keeping the 10-in-a-row dream alive.

Neil Lennon’s side have 16 games left to play in the Premiership which means a total of 48 points available.

In the unlikely event that they gain maximum points that would put them on 94 points, while Rangers currently sit on 66 and need just 29 to secure the title.

Add this to the shocking run of form that Celtic are currently on, without a win in their last four games, and the evidence starts to stack up that this title is a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile the Gers drew at Motherwell on Sunday and that was considered a bump in the road for them.

This shows just how high the standards are at Ibrox these days with that Fir Park result the first time that the Light Blues have dropped Premiership points since September 20.

That is a quite staggering statistic and sums up just how consistent this side assembled by Gerrard has been.

McCoist might still be fearful of a Celtic fightback, but we’re pretty confident that the Gers have proven themselves to be streets ahead of their Old Firm rivals and can be comfortable in the knowledge that the title is all-but wrapped up.
