‘One of the best players I’ve played with’ – Kris Boyd raves about rarely-seen Rangers star

Kris Boyd lavished praise upon Rangers player Greg Stewart while discussing possible departures that could happen this month.

Stewart is one of a few players on the fringes at Ibrox and Boyd assessed the likelihood of him leaving before the window closes.

In doing so he pointed out how good a player the 30-year-old is, and attempted to remind supporters of his performances a few years ago.

Appearing on the Sky Sports Scottish Football Podcast (44:02), Boyd said, “You’ve got to remember that people like Greg Stewart are still there.

“Will they probably move on? Maybe, but it can be difficult making that move.

“Greg Stewart I thought was one of the best players I’ve played with, was fantastic with the ball.

“You go back to his spell at Kilmarnock we were all speaking about Alex McCleish calling him up for the Scotland squad.”

Time for a move away

For Boyd to label Stewart as one of the best players he has played with is serious praise since he is a two-time SPFL winner.

However, that was the Stewart of old and he shows no signs of replicating his Dundee days, when he scored 32 goals and made 27 assists in the top-flight between 2014-16.

That form earned him a move to English Championship side Birmingham City, but he failed to make his mark down south.

A move to Aberdeen followed and then came the spell Boyd refers to, when he made 15 goal contributions in 16 games while on loan at Kilmarnock.

Steven Gerrard liked him enough to bring him to Ibrox after that stint, but he has not been a part of the manager’s plans.

The forward has only played 113 minutes of football across four appearances this term, and hasn’t even been trusted to play in cup competitions.

It was a similar story last season when he started just seven times, and considering his career history it is surprising a club hasn’t come in for him yet.

Perhaps Boyd is correct in his assessment that Stewart may be a hard sell, but it would be useful to offload his wages and sign target Scott Wright as a replacement.
