Exclusive: Alex McLeish reacts as Steven Gerrard confirms major Rangers fitness boost

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack may have to settle for a place on the bench against Ross County after returning from injury.

The Scottish international has been missing since the win over Aberdeen before Christmas, and Steven Gerrard confirmed his return this week.

McLeish has questioned whether Jack will have the required match fitness and admitted that coming off the bench at Ibrox may help his recovery.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I guess that the real question is getting the rhythm back and getting some football practise again.

“Doing training drills with the medical staff and getting himself back to fitness, then a lot of that, there’s nothing like match practice and that’s what he will be aware of. Can he come back in at full speed?

“Is he worthy of a spot on the bench? Get him on and get his legs going again, that’s all for the knowledge and experience of Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister.”

Bringing Jack off the bench is definitely the right way to go.

The 28-year-old has been missing for a significant amount of time, and it would be ludicrous to throw him straight into the deep end when there is no need.

Steven Davis and Glen Kamara have been the heartbeat of the side for the majority of this run, and having reinforcements on the bench could give them the competition to improve even further.

Jack will offer valuable experience, and with important games against the likes of Hibernian coming up, his grit and determination in midfield will be great for the Light Blues.
