‘Tremendous’ – Exclusive: McLeish blown away by Rangers ace, makes Souness comparison

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has been blown away by Rangers midfielder Steven Davis after reaching his 300th appearance for the club.

The Northern Ireland international hit the milestone against Motherwell after a couple of spells at Ibrox in his career.

McLeish has compared the veteran to the likes of Graeme Souness, admitting that he has become a “top player” over his career in Scotland and England.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I’ve always had time for these tremendous midfielders.

“Even back to Souness and Gordon Strachan, really high level of midfield play – they just know their way around the pitch and they’ve got a radar in there and they go into the position where you see them receive the ball with nobody near them.

“He [Davis] is so gifted in terms of his movement and his knowledge of where to go – he’s been a great signing. You’re always looking for a nucleus of players who like to play almost every week, and Davis is one of those players.

“Steven could have been an understudy to Barry [Ferguson] but going forward in his career, he’s become a top player.”

What a career it has been, and he isn’t finished yet.

Davis has stepped up once again this season, with Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield suffering serious injuries in the past couple of months.

The 36-year-old won’t have expected to have been involved as he has been, but he deserves tonnes of credit alongside Glen Kamara.

Gerrard has already reiterated his plans to keep Davis past this season with a new contract, and he has fully earned that.

This could be the perfect season for the Bears midfielder, 300 club appearances and lifting the Scottish Premiership – bring it on.
