Ibrox View: Latest Scott Wright update could threaten to derail Rangers January swoop

Rangers seem as though they are struggling to reach an agreement with Aberdeen for midfielder Scott Wright to head to Ibrox this month.

Steven Gerrard, as quoted by FourFourTwo, has already confirmed that the Gers could strike a swap deal with Aberdeen so that Wright, 23, can join the Premiership leaders this month rather than in the summer, when his Pittodrie contract expires.

The Rangers manager added that they are “extremely close” to agreeing a pre-contract deal for Wright to join the Glasgow club in the summer.

However, a new update by the Glasgow Evening Times suggests that talks over Wright heading to Ibrox this month are not going well.

The newspaper reports that there have been “no developments on talks” for the Aberdeen academy product to join the Light Blues this month.

It’s in the best interests of everyone that Wright joins Rangers this month, especially if it’s a swap deal as it means Gerrard will get rid of a fringe player and replace him with someone who could play a role in the first-team right away.

Derek Ferguson has recently told Si Ferry’s Open Goal on YouTube that he would rather see Wright stay at Aberdeen for the rest of the season and get more games under his belt there.

However, Aberdeen legend Willie Miller has written on the  Aberdeen Evening Express website that “it would be better that a deal is done sooner rather than later”.

And we’re sorry to disagree with Ferguson but we think Miller is on the right tracks.

If the January transfer window closes and Wright remains at Pittodrie but has agreed a pre-contract with Rangers, will Derek McInnes want to play him? Will he want to continue developing a player for a team he views as a rival? And we don’t mean to question Wright’s professionalism but McInnes could be worried about a drop in form from the attacking midfielder if he knows he’s already on his way to Ibrox.

It would be in the best interests of everyone involved if this deal is tied up as soon as possible so that Wright’s development can be left in the hands of Gerrard and Rangers.

Let’s hope there’s a breakthrough in these talks because we feel that Wright could play a big role at Ibrox in the second half of this season if a deal is struck before the end of the month.
