‘Perfect’ – Exclusive: Pundit labels Rangers player ‘the difference’ in Motherwell draw
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has labelled Rangers forward Cedric Itten as the difference in the 1-1 draw against Motherwell on Sunday.
The Swiss colossus nodded home the all-important equaliser at Fir Park only minutes after coming off the bench for Ianis Hagi.
McLeish claimed that Itten’s presence in the box allowed the Bears to deliver better crosses into the box than they could with just Alfredo Morelos to aim for.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “They used Itten’s strengths to a tee because they stood the cross up and it was perfect for him.
“He’s a couple of inches taller than the opponent, so he had that advantage, but if you stand the ball up sometimes just having a look and standing it up for the striker to attack it, is exactly what got Rangers back into the game.
“That was the difference with Itten coming on and his presence inside the Motherwell box was much, much different to what they had just before he came on.”
Steven Gerrard labelled Itten as “quality” after the game and even admitted that he could be closing in on another start against Ross County.
The 23-year-old replaced Hagi who struggled for the first hour and could be worrying for his place on Saturday at Ibrox.
Kemar Roofe is also returning from his injury this week, so Gerrard will have plenty of decisions to make between now and the weekend.
Itten deserves his place, and it is time for him to prove himself and potentially cement his spot in the side for many weeks to come.
