‘My advice would be’ – Weir urges £13k/wk star to stay at Ibrox if Rangers land 55

David Weir has spoken about his former Rangers teammate Allan McGregor, praising his recent form as well as discussing his future – and said the player might consider leaving if Rangers win the title.

The goalkeeper has been a near-ever-present for Steven Gerrard’s side this year, with 24 appearances, but his contract expires in the summer.

The Gers boss has recently declared his aim to get the 38-year-old signed on a new deal, but Weir hinted at a possible exit at the end of the season – if Rangers win silverware.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Weir said, “Allan [McGregor] has shown fairly recently he’s more than capable of producing what’s required, which is really important.

“Allan is competitive, he will realise his career won’t go on forever.

“It will be interesting to see if Allan will want to leave at the top. Walter [Smith] kind of did that, to be fair.

“I can only give my opinion because I don’t know what he’s thinking or what his decision will be.

“My advice would be to keep on playing as long as you can, as long as you think you’re capable of doing it. Age is only a number.”

Get him signed

There are few better placed to judge McGregor’s current situation than Weir, since he prolonged his time at Ibrox for as long as possible at the end of his career.

The experience Weir had was valuable to Walter Smith, and McGregor provides the same positives for Stevie G in terms of acting as a role model for younger players.

McGregor’s performances on the pitch prove he is still capable of playing for a team aiming for the title, and has conceded just five league goals this season.

Losing his experience could be a difficult obstacle to overcome, and since he is reportedly on £13,000 a week a new contract would hardly impact the budget.

Gerrard, therefore, needs to get this business conducted as soon as possible, or at the very least convince McGregor that he is a firm part of the plans for next season.

After all, at his age the shot-stopper’s main concern will likely be playing as many minutes as possible – if he wants to continue, that is.

In other Rangers news, a potential move for one transfer target this month has been ruled out by a player’s agent.
