‘Wonderful’ – Michael Stewart wowed by one Rangers player after draw v Motherwell

Michael Stewart was blown away by Jermain Defoe’s first touch when the Rangers striker almost scored off the bench against Motherwell on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by the Steelmen at Fir Park with Cedric Itten’s 72nd-minute rescuing a point for the runaway Premiership leaders.

However, the Light Blues could have bagged all three points of Defoe scored when he came off the bench for the final seven minutes.

The 38-year-old brought down a James Tavernier shot superbly at the back-post but couldn’t direct his shot past Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly.

Stewart was in awe of the experienced forward’s control ahead of his effort at goal.

“Look, it’s a wonderful take,” Stewart said on BBC Sportscene on Sunday. “One touch, spin and strike.

“It’s just so close to Kelly. If it was a yard either side it would have probably gone in the back of the net.”

Painstakingly close for Defoe

Defoe’s struggled for game-time at Rangers this season but with him now 38-years-old and out of contract in the summer, that was expected.

Gerrard has plenty of options to play up front but Defoe still has what it takes to produce big moments at Ibrox.

The former Tottenham striker has netted four times in 10 appearances across all competitions for the Gers this season. His stunning goal against Ross County in December was a big reminder of what this player is capable of.

It would have been yet another superb moment of Defoe’s if he managed to score that chance at Fir Park as it would have sealed a massive three points for Rangers in a game that they didn’t play well in.

Gerrard’s men have been faltering at late.

They saw their winning streak in the Premiership end on Sunday but they still managed to do enough to secure a draw and keep the momentum going.

Defoe is the kind of player who’s capable of helping that momentum. We still think there’s a massive moment left in him this season.
