‘Got to move on’ – Exclusive: McLeish issues verdict as Rangers set to miss out on deal

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers can’t have “sleepless nights” as they look set to miss out on Charlton sensation Alfie Doughty in January.

It was reported that the Bears, along with Celtic had offered pre-contract deals as they looked to replicate the deal for Joe Aribo previously.

Stoke boss Michael O’Neill has confirmed that his side have bid for the winger, as he looks set to move to the Championship rather than Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Listen, if it’s not in your control, you’ve got to move on.

“You can’t dwell and moan and have a sleepless night on every deal that you lose. You just have to get on with it, and there’s no doubt that he’s a good player.

“We know the potential again of another young player, who has gone for that kind of money. You would imagine the respect and the credit he has had over the months, but get on with it – you can’t get everybody.”

Rangers

This was never Rangers’ priority this month.

Aberdeen’s Scott Wright is closing in on a switch to Ibrox, with a pre-contract on the table for the summer, although Steven Gerrard admits he wants it done in January.

Rangers will be concentrating on trying to seal that deal in the next two weeks, rather than looking at other moves that could be completed.

Doughty is certainly a talent, but McLeish is spot on to claim they must not dwell and get ready to move on to brighter pastures.
