‘Absolutely remarkable’ – Ally McCoist can’t believe what Lennon has just said about Rangers
talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has expressed disbelief after Celtic manager Neil Lennon effectively said Rangers have won the Premiership.
Talking in his latest press conference, Lennon said, “Maybe the title is beyond us” and McCoist said this was “absolutely remarkable”.
McCoist was talking on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 9am) when he was asked about the incendiary comments about Dubai from Lennon, who insisted his club had nothing wrong.
Host Laura Woods said the focus for Celtic had to be back on the pitch now and McCoist said, “100%.”
He went on to say, “To be honest it looked like he’d given up on the title, which is remarkable, absolutely remarkable.
“If I was a Celtic supporter I’d want Lennon to come out and apologise for the Dubai trip, and say they got it wrong, and also say that he would fight for every single point in the Premiership and that’s not what Celtic fans got.”
Foot in mouth
It seems to us as if the Celtic PR and comms team must have been put on furlough. We can’t think of any other reason why Lennon would think it’s okay to rake the coals like this.
But McCoist is right. What must be even tougher for Celtic fans is the admission that the title race is over.
In all reality we know it, the Celtic fans know it and everyone up in Scotland knows it.
However, as a manager, you don’t concede the title to your arch-rivals in public, when it’s still mathematically possible to catch them.
How does he expect to lift his players if the title race is conceded? They struggled to lift their game for their supposed 10-in-a-row this season. How will they play when Lennon has thrown in the towel and said that Celtic are playing for second place?
We can only put it down to pressure. It’s something Celtic haven’t experienced for a while and it seems like an alien concept to Lennon.
