‘We were the better team’: Graham Alexander puzzled by controversial moment v Rangers

Rangers failed to extend their winning run against Motherwell on Sunday and opposition manager Graham Alexander felt they were fortunate to come away with a point.

The Scot was overseeing his second match in charge and expressed his admiration for his players, while highlighting a controversial moment in the match.

Cedric Itten’s equaliser came from an offside position, according to Alexander, who argues that it should not have stood.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, the Well boss said, “I’m so proud of the players – and every member of staff that has helped us this week to prepare for this game.

“I thought we were the better team in the first half and in the second half, we defended really well.

“I don’t think the Rangers goal should have counted – the lad looks offside when the ball comes in but that’s not within our control.

“The structure of the team, the motivation of the players was top-notch.”

The image above shows how tight a call it was for the linesman to make, so it would have been harsh to rule it out.

As for being the better team, it is difficult to see how Alexander reached that conclusion.

Yes Rangers were not at their best, but we dominated for large spells and had 16 shots to show for our efforts.

There would have been more too if not for Motherwell’s embarrassing set-up, putting ten men behind the ball to cut off any space for our attackers.

We were on top of Alexander’s team in all areas, winning 81% of our attempted tackles compared to their 39%, while also coming out on top in aerial duels won.

A return of five shots and just 27% possession for the home side shows how much we controlled the game, and with a bit more quality in the final third we would have extended our winning league run.

In other Rangers news, fans have been destroying one player for his display at Fir Park.
