‘Fantastic, it’s not like him’ – Kris Boyd blown away by Rangers player in 1-1 draw v Motherwell
Kris Boyd was raving about Alfredo Morelos when he had a superb chance to score for Rangers in the first half of their 1-1 draw with Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.
Morelos, 24, almost bagged his 11th goal of the season just after Devante Cole put the home side ahead when the Colombia international glanced a header just inches wide of the post.
Borna Barisic’s superb cross and Morelos’ ability to win the header had Boyd drooling at the break but unfortunately, the Gers striker was unable to score.
“It was great movement, to be fair. When you see it, it was fantastic actually,” said Boyd on Sky Sports Football at half-time [12:53pm].
“It’s not like him because he’s usually waiting at the back stick but he gets across, it’s a great leap.”
James McFadden added that it was an “unbelievable” cross into the box by Barisic.
Boyd replied: “[Barisic] did well to dig it out but we expect that James, from Barisic and [James] Tavernier in those areas.
“But Alfredo Morelos does really, really well to get across [Declan] Gallagher there. You can see the leap and he’s very, very unlucky.
“It’s not a typical Alfredo Morelos movement.”
Alfie getting back to his best
Morelos was feeding off scraps at Fir Park with the Rangers attacking players failing to supply much in the way of chances.
The Colombian striker was back to his best against Aberdeen last week and we really thought he was going to get on the scoresheet in the first half at Motherwell when his header went narrowly wide.
We cannot blame El Bufalo for failing to score that because he did so well just to get the header goalwards and it was just so, so close.
Morelos will have better chances than that in most games but Motherwell’s tendency to sit deep and welcome pressure, coupled with poor displays by the likes of Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo really made Morelos struggle.
He is showing encouraging signs though, in our opinion.
Morelos has been off the boil for a while but there are little things there that suggest he’s getting back to his best.
Let’s hope it’s not long before that happens.
