Exclusive: Alex McLeish delighted with response from under-pressure Rangers star

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos was put under mountains of pressure after the injury to Kemar Roofe.

The Colombian has stepped up since, scoring twice in the 2-1 win over Aberdeen and will likely get another chance in that central role against Motherwell this afternoon.

McLeish believes that Morelos still isn’t in the top categories of strikers, and needs to improve his composure for the so-called easier chances.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It was a shakeup for Morelos.

“He was under a bit of pressure, and you could see that. He’s still learning his trade a little bit is Morelos and if he wants to keep going to the highest level then these are the things he has to perfect.

“What he is really good at, is the instinctive goals. He just drifts into space to collect the ball, it seems like he comes alive in there. The easier chances he tends to not have that composure as yet that the top strikers do.”

We get what McLeish is saying.

Against Aberdeen, Morelos could have opened the scoring instantly but fluffed his lines. That was before he went on to score two cracking goals which he had no right to do so.

With Roofe missing, it is critical that the forward stepped up, and Steven Gerrard will be delighted with the impact that Morelos is having on this side again.

Cedric Itten also offers another option, with this new-found squad depth being tested once again at Ibrox over this busy period.
