‘Amateur’, ‘Disgraceful’, ‘He never learns’ – Many Rangers fans annihilate player at HT v M’well
Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to tear James Tavernier to shreds for his performance in the first half against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.
Tavernier, 29, may be leading the charge to win the Gers’ player of the season award with 17 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season but the captain’s defensive work is still being slammed by sections of supporters.
Devante Cole scored just the seventh Premiership goal Rangers have conceded this season in the first half and many believe Tavernier’s poor defending played a role.
Motherwell passed the ball around well, to be fair to them. Tavernier and centre-back Connor Goldson both got dragged out of position while backtracking Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo both failed to stop the home side’s attacking move.
The ball ended up being fed to Cole in the box after Tavernier failed to keep track of the Well players in the build-up.
On top of that, Tavernier’s delivery hadn’t been the best in that first half and he will have to step it up big time after the break if he wants to help the Light Blues preserve their unbeaten record and, hopefully, build on their winning streak.
But that hasn’t stopped a lot of fans from showing anger towards Tavernier’s display with one saying it was “amateur hour“.
Here is a selection of their tweets:

The defensive side to Tavernier’s game has always faced criticism but he does so much in the attack that his lapses are forgiven.
But when he’s not offering much going forward, he reverts back to the frustrating right-back who struggled to shine under Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha.
He cannot fall back into that rut he was in. Steven Gerrard needs to do what he can to pick up Tav’s performances because he’s definitely starting to struggle.
Maybe a rest is needed.
