Rangers 24y/o with just two league starts drops hint about wanting number nine role

Rangers striker Cedric Itten has dropped a hint that he prefers to play through the middle, despite Steven Gerrard utilising him out wide at times this season.

Speaking to The Scotsman ahead of Sunday’s game against Motherwell, Itten provided supporters with an insight into his tactical flexibility: “I think I can play in all three positions across the front.

“I’ve played more games as a number nine at my previous clubs but I like all three positions and it’s also good to learn different things.”

Itten has been a regular feature in the Rangers squad following his £3million summer move to Ibrox.

However, regular stars have been hard to come by for the Swiss striker, who has been limited to just two league starts so far.

That could change if Gerrard decides to rotate his side as the Gers travel to Fir Park.

Loves playing against Motherwell

If there was ever a game for Gerrard to throw Itten into the starting XI, it would be Sunday’s against Motherwell.

The striker has scored four times for Rangers in all competitions this season and three of those goals have come against Sunday’s opponents.

The form of Alfredo Morelos may keep him out of the side on this occasion, but Itten has impressed when he has been used from the bench.

Described as ‘a real handful’ by Gerrard after his goal against the Well earlier this season, Itten has provided a certain chaos factor off the bench.

His willingness and determination to chase down loose balls has often caught defenders off guard late on, while some of the goals he has scored – like the header against Motherwell at Ibrox – have been crucial.

In any other campaign, Itten would be considered unlucky not to start more often for Rangers, but following the form of Ryan Kent, Kemar Roofe and the aforementioned Morelos, he is going to need to bide his time at Ibrox.
