Exclusive: Alex McLeish hails ‘Selfless’ work of Rangers ace after Gerrard change
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has hailed the clear change in Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos and his “selfless” work for the Bears this season.
After bringing in Kemar Roofe in the summer, Steven Gerrard moved the Colombian into a wider role, which has seen his goal involvements dry up.
Morelos had only scored four goals in 17 appearances before the win over Aberdeen where he returned to a central role and found the back of the net twice.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Certainly. There was the real change in his performance, his goalscoring.
“In saying that, in the previous weeks, I think he’s played a different role. He was always greedy to get into the box, always greedy to get goal-scoring chances. This time he’s for the team’s cause, he’s done some selfless work.
“He’s tracked back, he’s not been in those positions where, maybe in the past two years he would have been, but Rangers all-around wasn’t as great then.
“With all good strikers, they only need one moment, and he is in that category of good strikers, not in the top, but certainly a really good striker.”
Gerrard will be delighted with the attitude of Morelos.
That has always been the problem with El Bufalo, but since his ban last month, he has really cracked on and started to hit his former heights at Ibrox.
No one will have wished an injury on Roofe, but this has been a blessing in disguise for Morelos, who should be in top-form when his strike partner returns.
The South American is used to being the main man in Glasgow, and now he has that vital support, his role has changed.
Thankfully, his performances haven’t and McLeish is spot on to hail his work.
