Derek Ferguson details ‘behind the scenes’ fears over star exit in January
Ex-Rangers player Derek Ferguson raised doubt about the future of Ryan Kent when discussing the links to Aberdeen’s Scott Wright.
Derek McInnes has confirmed the Gers want the winger, leading Ferguson to worry that Leeds may be turning their attention back to Kent after showing interest previously.
The former midfielder suggested Wright could be viewed as a potential replacement for the 24-year-old, implying that certain information is not always made public.
He told Si Ferry’s Open Goal podcast, “We don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes at Rangers. Is somebody coming in for Kent?
“There obviously has been interest from Leeds United at certain times so maybe there’s something happening there. Maybe they look at (Wright) as a replacement.”
Keeping our best players
Steven Gerrard wouldn’t be so unwise as to sell such a key player at this stage in the season.
His fierce pursuit of the former Liverpool player in 2019 showed how highly he values the winger, and Kent’s place in the first-team ever since underlines his importance to us.
As a result, even if Leeds do pay close attention, we will likely tell them to look elsewhere like we did in the summer.
That is the only option Rangers should take, and a failure to do so would be asking for the title to slip away.
Wright may be a talent but he has been limited to 13 appearances for Aberdeen this term, which shows he is not quite ready.
We are all for boosting options and bringing in young talent, but not if it means important players are leaving, and Kent is exactly that.
A return to form last week saw him play a valuable role at Pittodrie with two assists, taking his SPFL goal contributions to an impressive 11.
There are few players in the squad who would be able to replace the goals he scores and provides, particularly now the squad has been hit by injuries to Kemar Roofe and Scott Arfield among others.
We do not share Ferguson’s worry about potential interest in Kent, therefore, as we do not believe the club would be so naive to sell the attacker this month.
In other Rangers news, Steven Gerrard has provided a big injury update ahead of the Motherwell match.
