‘Shocked’ – Ferguson delivers verdict as Doncaster comments on null and void Gers issue

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has shot down talk of the Scottish Premiership getting abandoned and says it must not be null and voided.

With coronavirus restrictions starting to bind the Scottish game SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has refused to rule out the possibility of the league being declared ‘null and void’.

This would act as a massive blow to Steven Gerrard and his side who have swept all before them this season and the Gers fans who are dreaming of a first top-flight title since 2010/11.

Rangers

Speaking in his Daily Record column Ferguson played down fears that Rangers’ runaway lead this season could be for nothing, saying: “Well, the only thing that should be null and void is all talk of null and void – even if Neil Doncaster refused to completely rule it out yesterday.

“It won’t happen. I’m convinced the SPFL will try everything in their power to make sure the Premiership is finished.

“You know how strict they’ve been in terms of the testing, with the top-flight clubs getting done twice a week. They are spending a lot of money on it and they are in their bubbles, so I would be shocked if the SPFL stop the season early.”

Rangers

Gers superiority there for all to see

Rangers are currently 21 points clear of second-placed Celtic, albeit their Old Firm rivals have three games in hand, and are still unbeaten in the Premiership dropping just four points from 23 games.

The title appears to be all but a formality now with a monumental collapse of epic proportions needed for Rangers not to end Celtic dreams of 10-in-a-row.

Given the 2019/20 Premiership was decided on an average points per game basis after being curtailed in May following its initial suspension in March, it seems highly unlikely that the Gers could be deprived of the title this year, even if the season is ended.

At the point of football’s pause last year Celtic were 13 points clear after 30 games compared to Rangers’ 29.

While there may have been more games played last year before the league was halted it is clear for all to see that there is a dominant team in this division this season and they must be rewarded for that.

Ferguson is right – null and void talk should be absolutely dismissed as a ludicrous suggestion.
