‘Keith Jackson clutching at straws’ – Many Rangers fans slam Daily Record’s ‘Bizarre journalism’

Rangers fans have blasted the Daily Record and journalist Keith Jackson over a story about Neil Doncaster supposedly refusing the rule out the possibility of the season being declared null and void.

In an interview with Record reporter Jackson, the SPFL chief executive was asked whether null and void was still an option for this season if the impact of COVID-19 becomes too great for the Scottish leagues.

Doncaster said that the option of null and void is “a matter for the clubs” and added “members might have a decision to make” if the Scottish Government call a halt to all matches.

Last season, Doncaster was against the idea of nulling and voiding the season and when pressed by Jackson as to why his stance has softened slightly this term, the SPFL chief replied: “You’ve got to bear in mind over 75 per cent of games had been played in all four divisions of the SPFL when the season was curtailed. We certainly hope we will complete 100 per cent of the fixtures in all four divisions this season. It will be for the members to determine what happens in the event they are not.”

As much as we don’t want to see the season declared null and void with Rangers so far ahead at the top of the Premiership table, you cannot blame Doncaster for not leaning one way or the other when it’s all hypothetical at the moment.

And, in truth, if you read his words, he doesn’t rule out null and void being an option if the season is halted again.

Some Rangers fans have really taken offence to a headline on the Daily Record’s Twitter account, which says: “Neil Doncaster refuses to rule out null and void as Rangers sit 21 points ahead of Celtic.”

In our opinion, that is a statement of fact when you read the interview. Doncaster was asked about null and void and he literally refused to rule it out. He also refused to say it wasn’t an option too.

A section of supporters are really furious with the Record and with Jackson in particular though, with one claiming it’s a “shambles of an article“.
