Ferguson delivers verdict on Scott Wright deal, names two Rangers players who may head to Dons

Derek Ferguson is concerned that if Scott Wright joins Rangers this month, the Aberdeen academy product could see his development stall.

Speaking on Friday, Steven Gerrard confirmed that the Gers are in talks to sign 23-year-old Wright [Sky Sports], whose deal expires at Pittodrie expires at the end of the season.

However, in order to sign Wright this month, Gerrard has revealed that a player currently on the books at Ibrox could be used as a makeweight to get a swap deal signed off.

According to ex-Rangers midfielder Ferguson, Greg Stewart or Ross McCrorie, who’s currently on loan at Aberdeen, could be used as part of a deal.

However, Ferguson holds reservations about whether a move to Ibrox this month will benefit Wright more than it would if he stayed in the north-east.

“He’s a talented boy, 23-years-old. He’s not played a lot of football but I think he’s started this season pretty well,” Ferguson said on Si Ferry’s Open Goal on YouTube.

“It will be a disappointment not just for the manager [Derek] McInnes but for the Aberdeen fans. He’s been brought through the academy, a lot of time and effort has gone into Scott. You’re just starting to see the benefits of that hard work.

“He looks like he’s going to leave and it could be in this window. I think there’s a wee deal to be done. [Rangers] have got the boy Stewart, who can’t break into the first-team or even the squad. He might end up back at Pittodrie or something might happen with McCrorie.

“But the one thing about Scott Wright is that the talent is there absolutely – there’s no question about that. But he needs to get games under his belt. If he goes to Rangers, will he play? I don’t think so. I think he’ll be a squad player.

“He’s got a big decision to make, the young man. I think the best bet would be to leave him at Aberdeen until the end of the season so he gets more games under his belt, which would be beneficial, and then come to some sort of agreement.”

Wright could play more than you think

Rangers are running away with the Premiership and still have games to play in the Europa League and the Scottish Cup so if Wright comes in this month, we think he’ll get plenty of game-time.

While Ferguson thinks he might be best off left at Aberdeen until the summer, who’s to say that McInnes will play a player he knows full well is leaving? Why would McInnes continue to develop what is essentially a Rangers player?

At least if the 23-year-old heads to Ibrox this month, Gerrard and Ross Wilson will be able to control the attacker’s development but we think he’ll get plenty of game-time anway.

Wright can play on the wing or in a central role behind the striker, which suits the Gers well.

Jordan Jones is out of the first-team picture after his breach of COVID-19 protocol so Wright is bound to be above him in the pecking order and maybe even above players like Brandon Barker.

Wright has started 11 of Aberdeen’s 21 Premiership matches this season so it’s not as though he was a proper regular for McInnes.

Him joining the Gers this month is best for all parties and could even benefit the Light Blues financially if they can get someone like Stewart off their wage bill in return for the Dons youngster.
