Exclusive: Alex McLeish reacts to ‘very significant’ step towards Rangers lifting title

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has labelled Rangers 2-1 win over Aberdeen as a “very significant” step towards the Scottish Premiership title.

Alfredo Morelos scored twice at Pittodrie, with the Bears holding out during a late onslaught despite the home side having 10-men.

McLeish believes that the Dons are always a “banana skin” and the Bears have sent out a real message beating them three times this season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I believe that result was very significant.

“There are people who obviously have their opinions, and they would have said that could have been a banana skin for anybody going to Aberdeen, it’s notoriously a difficult place to go.

“For me, it was mentally, as well as getting the result, a very very important game for Rangers, especially the way they won it.”

It was another great three points for Rangers.

Aberdeen had no excuses as they did last time at Ibrox, and the Bears went to Pittodrie and did the business without significant starters such as Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack.

Steven Gerrard’s men kept 79.2% of the ball, had 13 more shots on goal according to WhoScored, but they also showed their determination to hold out a late push forward from Aberdeen.

With Celtic also drawing against Hibernian, Rangers now hold a 21-point lead in the Scottish Premiership – turns out this weekend could turn out to be more significant than once thought.
