Rangers eye classy midfielder who English club signed for £1.5m in 2020 – report

Rangers are interested in signing Coventry City’s Gustavo Hamer, according to a report from the Press Association.

It is understood the English Championship outfit are keen to keep hold of the midfielder this month but face a tough ask to prevent a transfer in the future.

The Gers may see the 23-year-old as a long-term target, particularly as he only signed for the Sky Blues last summer in a £1.5million deal.

He has impressed in his debut season in England, with his four goals and two assists leading to pundits calling him a “class act”.

Coventry hold a strong negotiating position, too, since Hamer’s contract expires in 2023.

Planning for the future?

There have been calls from some fans for Steven Gerrard to sign a new midfielder this month following injuries to Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack.

We feel that the more options available to the boss, the better, particularly with Europa League fixtures coming up soon.

That being said, it is important we don’t rush to make an addition just for the sake of making a signing.

Hamer has impressed and seems to be developing well at what is a reasonably high standard.

The interest in him is a positive, but it would be good for Stevie G to bide his time a little, to build up an accurate picture of the midfielder’s pros and cons before signing him.

From that he will gain an understanding of how he can benefit the team, and if the Gers manager then decides he would be a valuable asset, we’re all for bringing him in.
