‘I just hope he goes to Rangers’ – Kris Boyd thrilled with ‘Talented’ player wanted at Ibrox

Aberdeen’s Scott Wright has caught the attention of Rangers this month and ex-striker Kris Boyd is encouraged by that development.

The former Scotland international knows exactly what it takes to succeed at Ibrox and he believes Wright fits the mould.

Boyd discussed Wright’s style of play as well as the 23-year-old’s career up until now, which includes 16 appearances this term.

The Sky pundit also offered a word of warning in regard to the increased level of expectation the youngster should expect if he was to join the Gers.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Scottish Football podcast, Boyd said, “If you look at the way Rangers play, I think he fits into that.

“He’s not an out-and-out wide player, hugging the touchline, he comes in and looks to place, becoming that false striker in behind the main striker.

“That’s the way it suits Wright – he’s definitely someone who has shown he probably has got a step in him. It’s a big step, of course, playing under pressure every single week.

“He’s played all the age groups for Scotland as well, so there is a talented footballer in there, so I just hope he goes to Rangers and kicks on.

“Once again, it’s a young Scottish player being given the opportunity to make that step up to a big club. I hope he realises that opportunity and grasps it with both hands.”

Ready for a big club

As we detailed here, Wright has the attributes to be a hit at Ibrox, but he must take Boyd’s comments seriously.

The attacker has some of the best dribbling and smart passing stats in the league, per WyScout, and in those areas he is already competing with Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo.

And considering he is turning out for Aberdeen, that is mightily impressive.

Just imagine what he could do under Steven Gerrard’s guidance and the possible transfer becomes a whole lot more attractive.

A return of 5.03 attempted dribbles per 90 minutes shows Wright is adventurous and has the confidence to display his skill, and it is imperative he maintains that if he arrives.

We may have strong attackers like Kent, Ianis Hagi and Kemar Roofe, but when injuries and suspensions hit a lack of depth is suddenly uncovered.

We are experiencing that a little now and a player like Wright could help to solve the issue, while his style of play could introduce a different dimension to our attack if he acts as an impact sub.

He also has a respectable seven goal contributions this season, though with higher quality teammates at Ibrox he should only improve.
