‘Unbelievable’ – Ally McCoist predicts when Rangers will officially seal number 55
Ex-Rangers player Ally McCoist has put a time frame on when he expects the Gers to be crowned SPFL champions.
The former striker appeared on TalkSPORT on Wednesday morning and discussed the title race, and the effect that winning the league could have on Steven Gerrard.
Celtic’s draw on Monday means the Ibrox side hold a 21-point lead heading into the weekend, and McCoist believes the title may be settled by as early as February.
He told TalkSPORT, “He [Gerrard] will be thinking he is in the biggest and best job on the planet.
“He’s probably maybe six weeks away…away from realising the effect he will have on so many people and it is going to be unbelievable.
“I hope that Steven reaches that position and I would imagine that even he might be surprised at the effect it will have on so many people if and when he crosses that line.”
Getting carried away?
McCoist is understandably excited as the Gers have exceeded all expectations in blowing away opponents this campaign.
We are still unbeaten, but there is always a nagging doubt that a slip in form may be on the horizon, as at this stage last season we had only lost once in the league – to Celtic.
A first defeat could bring that about, so it is imperative that Gerrard and the squad remain grounded despite McCoist’s comments.
After all, Celtic could reduce the gap to 12 points if they win their games in hand. (Although that’s looking highly unlikely at the moment.)
While we would still have a healthy lead, it is doubtful that we will be champions before March is underway.
Between now and then we have seven league fixtures, one of which is a mid-week away game at Hibernian that could prove tricky.
On top of that, there are Europa League fixtures to contend with, and if we cast our minds back to the last campaign it is reasonable to be wary.
In February 2020 the Gers won just two out of five league games. We’re not celebrating until it’s done.
