Rangers senior player may join Aberdeen in Scott Wright swap deal – reliable journalist

Greg Stewart could return to Aberdeen as part of a swap deal that sees Scott Wright join Rangers this month, according to Sunday Mail journalist Scott McDermott.

Stewart, 30, has already had two loan spells at Pittodrie back when he was on the books at Birmingham City but could now return to the north-east on a permanent basis with Wright, 23, heading the other way.

Speaking on Tuesday, Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes confirmed that talks were underway about Wright joining the Light Blues with his deal at Pittodrie due to expire at the end of the season [BBC Sport].

The Daily Record had reported that while Rangers can approach Wright on a pre-contract basis with the view to him heading to Ibrox in the summer, the clubs could agree a deal that would see the attacker join Steven Gerrard’s side this month and a swap deal was mooted.

On Tuesday, McDermott was asked whether a swap deal involving Stewart could be possible. The Sunday Mail journalist replied on his personal Twitter account by saying: “Definitely possible.”

Two birds with one stone

We’re still not sure why Gerrard signed Stewart in 2019 other than the fact that he was available on a free transfer.

He’s unfortunately not been anywhere near good enough for Rangers with the forward scoring just three goals in 29 appearances across all competitions in his stint at Ibrox.

Stewart’s contract, like Wright’s, also expires at the end of the season so both players will more than likely move on for free this year.

If Aberdeen can get Stewart this month and we can get Wright, with no money exchanged, you would assume that both clubs will be happy.

McInnes has signed Stewart twice on loan in recent years so the chance to have him permanently will surely please the Aberdeen manager.

It kills two birds with one stone if this swap is agreed because it gets Stewart off the wage bill early and it also allows Gerrard to strengthen out wide in signing Wright permanently.
