‘Great capture’ – Exclusive: Alex McLeish thrilled by major Rangers transfer development

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has said that Aberdeen’s Scott Wright is a “great capture” for Rangers, as the winger seemingly homes in on a move to Ibrox.

Wright is out of contract in the summer but talks are ongoing about bringing him to Ibrox in this transfer window.

Speaking on Tuesday, Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes confirmed an approach from Steven Gerrard.

The Times then said that talks were ongoing with a potential renegotiation of the Ross McCrorie deal possible. He’s on loan at Aberdeen but his permanent switch could be brought forward to January, too.

Talking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “With the world we’re in at the moment, the economy is not amazing, and that will affect football clubs. Rangers need to be shrewd.

“They have to be good in their recruitment. And that means not only players who are ready to come and play in the first team, but players who have plenty of potential, too.

“And Scott Wright is a great capture and within the club’s coffers, I would have thought.

“But it’s also a sign that they will give young players an opportunity, and that’s great for Rangers fans who, when the government relaxes the rules, will flock back and see these players developing and becoming great players for the club.

“There are a lot of demands on you when you’re playing for Rangers and the players will know that.

“The right players will thrive on that pressure and Scott Wright looks like a very tidy player indeed.”

It does seem like there’s a big possibility that Wright will be a Rangers player when this transfer window shuts.

And there could be movement in the other direction too.

Times journalist Scott McDermott said that it was “definitely possible” that Greg Stewart could join Aberdeen as part of the deal.
