Report details what Scott Wright has told Derek McInnes with Rangers swap deal on the cards
Rangers could sign Aberdeen winger Scott Wright as early as this month as they plot a swoop to offer a pre-contract deal to the 23-year-old, according to the Daily Record.
The newspaper claims that after Wright rejected a new deal at Pittodrie and told Dons boss Derek McInnes he wants to keep his options open, the Gers told their Scottish Premiership rivals that “they intended to open pre-contract talks” with the ex-Scotland Under-21s international.
If the Light Blues do agree a pre-contract deal with Wright, he won’t join them until the end of the season when his contract expires. However, the Record adds “Aberdeen believe a deal could still be struck in this window, which could include a fee or possible player swap”.
Clever move by Dons
Aberdeen seem resigned to the fact that Wright will leave Pittodrie this year so it does seem in their best interests to strike a deal with Rangers this month.
Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson won’t be in a massive rush to sign the Dons academy product up before the end of January because they’re in the driving seat when it comes to this deal based on what’s been happening behind the scenes in the north-east.
However, Gerrard could do with another winger being added to his squad with Jordan Jones out of the picture after his flouting of COVID-19 regulations.
Wright has scored two goals and supplied five assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for Aberdeen this season.
He missed most of November and all of December with a hernia, but he’s since recovered and started against the Gers at Pittodrie on Sunday when Gerrard’s team won 2-1.
Wright is versatile enough to play on the left-wing, in a central attacking midfield role or even as a centre-forward, per transfermarkt.
He could be a clever addition to the Rangers attack this month but, as mentioned, we shouldn’t be in a rush to sign him.
