‘I spoke to Steven yesterday’ – McInnes hails Rangers boss’ approach to Wright deal
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has praised Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for his conduct as the Gers target Dons winger Scott Wright.
Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph reported that the Light Blues will target the 23-year-old this month.
McInnes has now confirmed Rangers’ interest and he was full of praise for Gerrard as he approached negotiations the right way.
McInnes is quoted by The Daily Record as saying, “There has been a conversation at boardroom level.
“I spoke to Steven [Gerrard] yesterday, he called me to say that they would have an interest in Scott on a pre-contract and wanted to do things properly.
“That is not always the case when it gets to players running out of contract. We appreciate that Rangers came through the front door and did things properly.”
This shows an exceptional level of class from Gerrard as he has no obligation to speak to an opposition manager when arranging a transfer.
Another club may have privately approached Wright and cut the club out of personal negotiations.
McInnes’ sincere comments show that he really does appreciate what Gerrard has done as they hint that most other managers wouldn’t take this personal step.
This could also be a clever move from Gerrard as McInnes seemingly hasn’t kicked up a fuss about Rangers swooping for one of his side’s better players halfway through the season.
The Dons are almost in a lose-lose scenario with Wright as they won’t want to lose him but there is no guarantee that he will sign a new deal with the attacker out of contract in the summer.
Whether Gerrard’s comments were simply professional courtesy or a move to aid the Gers’ transfer bid is up for debate but whatever the reason, it looks as if it hasn’t harmed the club’s attempts to sign Wright this month.
