‘Horrendous’ – Ally McCoist slams bias in Scotland as appeals shine spotlight on big controversy
Ally McCoist has savaged Celtic’s decision to go to Dubai for a ‘warm weather training camp’ as pictures emerged of players breaking Covid regulations.
He said the ‘double standards’ from the SPFL and SFA are staggering as he pointed to Kilmarnock and St Mirren, both set to appeal using Celtic’s camp as evidence.
Celtic have 14 players in self-isolation after Christopher Jullien tested positive for Covid on his return from Dubai. Jullien attended the ‘training’ camp despite being injured.
Talking on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 7.30am), McCoist said, “Honest to God, it’s carnage. It’s chaos. Absolute chaos. Celtic are all over the place, 13 players, three staff self-isolating.
“Ian Maxwell from the SFA came out yesterday and for some reason tried to defend it, which was horrendous to listen to.
“There’s an element of Celtic people hiding behind the fact of ‘Well the Government allowed us to do it, the SFA allowed us to do it’.
“You know something, it doesn’t matter whether they allowed you to do it, it was the wrong thing to do. Simple as. I thought the SFA let themselves down as well yesterday.
“Then they go over, and the first thing that happens – as you’d expect – is photographs of them come out sitting at the pool drinking beer.
“Earlier on in the season they’ve banned Aberdeen players for doing the exact same thing. They’ve banned Kilmarnock players for sitting next to each other on the bus?
“The double standards. The whole thing is a shambles to tell you the truth.”
Rangers vindicated
One of the good things to happen from this whole debacle is that the spotlight has been shone on the Scottish football authorities.
Rangers were ridiculed in some quarters for their bid to expose wrongdoing by the SPFL last year.
We’re looking vindicated now as more and more people point to the double standards at the top of Scottish football.
McCoist is the latest high-profile pundit to point it out.
Journalist Bill Leckie, Simon Jordan and Jim White also highlighted it on talkSPORT last week.
It’s crazy that it’s taken something as serious as this for people to throw their weight behind what Rangers have been saying for a long time.
There are major problems in the Scottish game and they need sorting out. This could be the catalyst that forces change.
