Ex-Rangers striker urges club to tie up challenging contract agreement

Former Rangers striker Jon Daly believes tying Steven Gerrard to a new contract is the next big task that awaits the club.

Gerrard is currently under contract until 2024 but the sensational start to the season made by Rangers is sure to have piqued the interest of big clubs around Europe and a new deal might be in the offering.

Daly played for the Gers between 2013-15 and scored 29 in 72 appearances before finishing his career at Raith Rovers.

As reported in the Glasgow Times Daly has urged Rangers to retain the services of Gerrard if they want to improve, saying: “If they can keep hold of their manager they can get better.

“That is the next big challenge for them if they do get over the line – keeping a hold of their manager.

“He has a high profile and I am sure there will be a lot of clubs knocking on the door and trying to secure his services. They need to tie him up for another number of years if they can.”

Gerrard sets Gers up for historic season

It would be no surprise to see elite clubs around Europe knocking down Rangers’ door to steal the services of Gerrard given the dominance his side has displayed this season.

After 23 games Rangers are still unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership and are 21 points clear of Celtic as they look set to shatter their rivals dreams of 10-in-a-row.

Gerrard also led his side to top of their Europa League group without a defeat, finishing ahead of Portuguese giants Benfica to set up a round of 32 clash with Polish side Lech Poznan.

Their only defeat of the season was a League Cup defeat to St Mirren on December 16 but they still have the Scottish Cup to come and a treble is still not out of the question.

Success in Europe will not be easy given the calibre of teams in the competition like Manchester United and AC Milan but if they can at least get to the quarter-finals that will mark real progress for the Light Blues after their round of 16 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last season.

If they do get that far, and Rangers secure the Premiership title at a canter, club figures will be mindful to tie Gerrard down as soon as possible and ward off interest from the European elite.
