Ibrox view: 0 key passes, big chance missed – Rangers target could be Ross Wilson flop

Rangers target John Lundstram returned to the Sheffield United starting line-up on Saturday but he failed to impress in the FA Cup.

The Blades edged out Bristol Rovers in a narrow 3-2 victory, but more would have been expected of Lundstram against League One opposition.

There were some positive aspects to his play, such as his pass accuracy of 84% and his three shots, per WhoScored.

However, he was hauled off with 20 minutes remaining, possibly because of his lack of impact on the game.

If Rangers want to improve, Ross Wilson must make additions who are an upgrade on the current options at the club.

And so far this season, Lundstram has failed to evidence that he could provide what is needed.

For example, against a side with arguably less quality than most SPFL sides, the midfielder failed to complete a single key pass, according to SofaScore.

That means he didn’t provide the support his strikers needed, and probably expected of him.

In games where the Gers are looking to break down a stubborn defence, Lundstram’s lack  of quality means he may struggle to find the intricate pass required.

That is a worry, as is the fact the 26-year-old failed to score the one big chance he was presented with.

It could be the case that the former Everton player is low on confidence, or the missed opportunity may indicate a lack of composure.

Either way that could prove problematic for Steven Gerrard, who must maintain his team’s current level of confidence and morale, as it is earning the team points even when they do not play particularly well.

As such, Wilson may have a difficult decision to make in regard to signing Lundstram, as the midfielder’s current form suggests he would be a risk.

To underline that, Lundstram has created just one big chance all season, while his pass accuracy in the opposition’s half ranks at a lowly 70%.

It would take a big effort from Gerrard to get the player back to his best and firing for Rangers, so the Ibrox outfit may have to look elsewhere if they are serious about improving the squad year on year.

In other Rangers news, one target has reportedly snubbed the club in favour of a move abroad.
