‘Form had dipped’ – Campbell hails explosive return of form for Rangers 24y/o

Rangers secured their sixth consecutive win by beating Aberdeen, and though Alfredo Morelos scored twice it was a resurgent display from Ryan Kent that stood out.

That’s according to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, who dissected the winger’s performance after the match.

The 24-year-old has scored five goals and assisted seven this season, but there have been criticisms labelled at Kent, such as his weakness in putting away chances.

On Sunday however, Kent was the creator with two assists, and Campbell explained why he proved so effective at Pittodrie.

He said, “Kent started the season brilliantly but his form had dipped in recent months.

“It can look like he is overcomplicating the game but against Aberdeen, he was dropping deep and looking to isolate defenders one-vs-one before driving at them.”

Campbell also paid attention to the winger’s movement and the way he dragged defenders out of position, opening up space for Morelos to exploit and score.

Just what Rangers needed

If Kent can prove his worst form is behind him that would ease Steven Gerrard’s worries and prevent the Gers boss turning to the transfer market for an alternative wide option.

Kent’s strong showing may just have come at the right time for Rangers and himself, therefore, and Gerrard may be a little relieved after his latest display.

After all, the Rangers no.14 had managed a WhoScored rating of seven or above just once in six league games prior to Sunday.

His lack of form was a contributing factor in the Gers’ declining performances, which led to criticism from Kris Boyd, but that could now be a thing of the past.

The Aberdeen match showed how capable the former Liverpool player is, and he must use it as a boost for upcoming matches.

Credit must go to the manager and coaching staff, as their work also brought about an improvement from Morelos – at least in terms of scoring goals.

In other Rangers news, one transfer target had a disappointing outing at the weekend that could spell trouble.
