Exclusive: Alex McLeish reacts to major development on Rangers-linked 24-year-old
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that Peterborough forward Siriki Dembele will be thinking of joining a bigger club such as Rangers after handing in a transfer request.
It was reported last week that the 24-year-old had handed in a transfer request after being linked with the likes of the two Old Firm clubs.
McLeish believes that the wingers’ agent will have been kicking down the door of Darragh MacAnthony to try and force an exit this month.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It’s normally from players that are not part of your set-up.
“From a smaller club, the handing a transfer request in, thinking that you could be going to a club like Rangers, that’s kind of normal nowadays.
“Agents can go and kick the door the down and say, ‘look, the kid wants to go’ – you would probably let him go, amid the interest from other clubs.”
Rangers appear to have set their sights elsewhere in January.
Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports reported on Monday that the Bears were set to approach Aberdeen forward Scott Wright, who could move to Ibrox this month.
That casts serious doubts over the possibility of also bringing Dembele to Ibrox.
The 24-year-old has scored five goals and assisted another four in his 18 League One appearances this season, and has only played one game in the past month.
Dembele is certainly trying to kick down the door of Peterborough to get a move this month, but it is looking increasingly likely that it won’t be to Rangers.
