‘It is a mauling’ – UK national journalist gushes over job Gerrard is doing on Celtic

Chief sports feature writer Riath Al-Samarrai has been gushing over the job Steven Gerrard is doing at Rangers in his latest column for the Daily Mail.

Writing in the Daily Mail ahead of Rangers’ meeting with Aberdeen on Sunday, Al-Samarrai could not help himself but praise the work of the ex-Liverpool midfielder following the club’s Old Firm win: “Another win over Celtic and another step towards Rangers’ first top-flight title in 10 years.

“They are currently unbeaten and 19 points clear — it is a mauling. Plenty questioned his right to get a first managerial gig at that level and he has come up with a pretty good answer.

“You sense Liverpool are watching with ever-growing enthusiasm.”

Rangers first unveiled Gerrard at Ibrox back in 2018, with the former Liverpool coach signing a four-year deal at the club.

Since then, there have been steady signs of improvement, with the Gers now fully reaping the rewards of appointing Gerrard this season as they charge to a 55th title.

Liverpool claims are not going to slow down

One of the major downsides to Rangers’ success this season is the constant talk about a potential move to Liverpool for Gerrard.

It is the nature of the beast that he is going to be continuously touted as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Quite rightly too – he is proving his worth with Rangers both domestically and in Europe and the first trophy under his belt will go some way to strengthening his case for the top job at Anfield.

If Gerrard is thinking ahead, he must learn from his former international colleague Frank Lampard, who is now under an increasing amount of pressure at Chelsea after landing his dream job.

There is no doubting that Liverpool will be his ‘dream job’, but he must avoid making the jump too soon like many believe Lampard has done at Stamford Bridge, or he risks seeing all the hard work that put himself in that position go to waste.
