Ibrox View: Stage set for ‘outstanding’ Dons 21y/o to impress in Rangers audition

Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson is the man to stop on Sunday when Rangers travel to Pittodrie in their latest Premiership clash.

The former Rangers academy star is a player in fine form and he has arguably been Aberdeen’s star man this season.

With nine goals and four assists in all competitions for the Dons, the 21-year-old’s performances are not going unnoticed by those of a Rangers persuasion.

Following a tweet by the player on New Year’s Day, many Rangers supporters believe that the player may have one eye on a potential Ibrox return in the near future.

Ferguson came through the ranks at Rangers but left for Hamilton in 2013, where he could pursue regular first-team opportunities.

Now a Scottish U-21 international, Ferguson is one of the highest-rated midfielders in the country and his good form comes at a time where the Gers have looked a little light in midfield.

Injuries to Ryan Jack and now Scott Arfield have certainly raised concerns that the club may need to bring in another body in the middle of the park.

While there have been no reports that claim that Ferguson is a player on Steven Gerrard’s radar, the player’s good form has certainly led to suggestions that he should be.

The Aberdeen star, who Derek McInnes recently labelled as ‘outstanding’, is the nephew of Rangers legend Barry Ferguson and has he previously tipped him for a bright future at either Ibrox or Celtic Park.

Capable of playing in various positions through the midfield, Ferguson has played in front of the back four and in more box-to-box roles this season, highlighting the versatility that he could bring to this Rangers squad.

It remains to be seen if we ever see Ferguson back at Ibrox in Rangers blue, but Sunday presents the perfect opportunity to show Steven Gerrard and his staff what he is all about.
