‘Agreed terms’ – EFL club accepts bid for player after pre-contract offer from Rangers
Charlton Athletic have accepted multiple bids for Rangers target Alfie Doughty, report Sky Sports.
Manager Lee Bowyer confirmed the news on Friday, with £650,000 (Sky Transfer Centre, 09/01, 08:00) offers coming from three Championship clubs.
Both Old Firm teams are believed to have made pre-contract offers to the wide man, whose current deal expires in the summer.
However, both Rangers and Celtic have fallen behind in the race for Doughty’s signature, as the Championship trio will now be able to offer personal terms.
“There are three Championship sides that we have agreed terms with. I expect Alfie will speak to all three of them. I think he should,” Bowyer told Sky Sports.
Need to act quickly
Doughty is an exciting young talent and at £650,000 he would be quite the bargain for Gers.
Like Joe Aribo, he has risen through the ranks at Charlton and proven his worth in a number of positions.
He could, therefore, be a valuable addition, as Steven Gerrard’s side have a lot of games left to play.
Importantly, the 21-year-old’s versatility doesn’t take away from his game either.
Most of Doughty’s games at the Valley have come at left-wing, and 1.7 key passes per game this term (WhoScored) shows he has an eye for creativity in that role.
That’s not all, however, as the Rangers target has also achieved 2.4 tackles per game, proving he can fulfill a defensive role also.
If he was to arrive he would provide balance on the left for Steven Gerrard, and with room to improve he has the potential to be as important at Ibrox as his former teammate Aribo.
In other Rangers news, several fans are desperate for Gerrard to fix one key area this month.
