‘Hopefully I can go back’ – Boyhood Rangers fan wants Ibrox return in future
Ex-Rangers midfielder Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has revealed that he would love to return to the club in the future.
Docherty left the Gers to join League One side Hull City back in August after previous spells away from the club on loan.
Speaking to The Athletic, Docherty mapped out his plans for the future. He said: “Do I really want to be the guy who was part of a winning squad but wasn’t really there? That’s not me. In two years I might have had to take a move looking downwards rather than one like now where I’m looking to go up again.
“I always look at guys like Davo (Steven Davis). He’s done his career right so, hopefully, I can go back when I’m 34.”
After joining boyhood club Rangers way back in 2018, Docherty was never truly able to cement a place in the squad and spent time on loan at Shrewsbury and Hibernian.
With Docherty out of favour at Ibrox, he signed a three-year deal with Hull City, where he is now playing regularly.
The 24-year-old has made 17 appearances this season, with Hull pushing an immediate return to the Championship via the automatic promotion spots.
A dream move that didn’t work out
Docherty was never going to turn down the chance to join his boyhood club back in 2018 and seeing where Rangers are now, it is easy to see why he may have stayed.
It would have no doubt been a difficult decision to leave Rangers, but he was clearly a player that wanted to put his long-term career first.
When you see the quality and the depth that Rangers have in the middle of the park, with the likes of Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, his chances were only going to get slimmer.
Acknowledging that it was not going to work out for him at Ibrox was the right call to make and he is now flourishing at Hull City.
He has the opportunity to play regularly and also push for promotion back into the second tier of English football.
Rangers supporters will no doubt wish him well, but this one was just not to be.
