Report: Rangers want to sign £40k-a-wk Celtic fan but could miss out amid big development
Rangers look set to miss out on Robert Snodgrass, who was a player of interest according to reliable source Ex-West Ham employee.
The host of the West Ham Way podcast (Jan 6) revealed that the former Scotland international, 33, was wanted by both Rangers and Celtic.
However, it appears as though Sam Allardyce has persuaded the winger to move to West Brom, with a medical set for Thursday.
“Robert Snodgrass is looking likely to leave,” ExWHUemployee said. “He had interest from Rangers and Celtic but I believe that West Brom are now looking to sign him.”
Snodgrass has six months remaining on his Hammers’ contract and has played just six times for David Moyes’ side this season.
However, as a keen Celtic fan it is perhaps unlikely that he would have decided to join the Gers to aid their title bid.
Short-term impact
The signing of Snodgrass would have been a bit of a surprise from the Ibrox club, as Gerrard has preferred to target younger players in recent windows.
And Gerrard isn’t short of options in attack.
Nevertheless, the former Aston Villa player has swathes of Premier League experience so may have been a handy option.
Snodgrass has won promotion with Leeds and Hull, and reached an FA Cup final with the latter.
The £40,000 a week star could have provided a cool head around the dressing room as Rangers edge closer to their first title since 2011.
Whether or not the Scot would be suitable for the long-term is a different question, but he could certainly provide guidance to the likes of Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent.
As a cheap option Snodgrass certainly could have been a risk willing to take, but we doubt that Gerrard will rue the missed opportunity.
