Charlie Adam tips Rangers senior ace to join English club, claims Ibrox trio will exit in 2021
Jermain Defoe could return to England once his contract at Rangers expires at the end of the season, according to Charlie Adam.
Defoe will turn 39-years-old later this year and has struggled for game-time at Ibrox this term with just nine appearances in all competitions and only three Scottish Premiership starts.
On Wednesday, PLZ Soccer host Peter Martin shared a list of players who are likely to leave Rangers in 2021.
Ex-Rangers midfielder Adam agrees with a lot of Martin’s list however, he claims that Steven Davis and Allan McGregor are likely to get new deals and that Borna Barisic will only get sold if a big-money offer is made for him.
Adam is less sure about Defoe’s future though.
After seeing Martin’s list of players, Adam told The Football Show: “You’re spot on, Peter.
“I think the only three certainties will be they probably won’t sell Barisic unless it’s silly money. McGregor and Davis will be there. The rest, I think, could be in for leaving.
“Defoe, it’s up to his decision as to what he wants to do, if Gerrard wants to keep him around as an experienced player or maybe the coaching side as well. That might be something that you look at but he might want to go back down south and start something else.
“I don’t know what will happen with Defoe but Davis, Barisic and McGregor are certainties to be staying for next season with what they’ve contributed.
“Barisic has been excellent [and will stay] unless big money comes in for him.
“[Alfredo] Morelos, [George] Edmundson, [Jordan] Jones – I could see all them going.”
Summer exodus at Ibrox?
It seems likely that a lot of players will leave Rangers at the end of the season but Adam is right about the trio he named to stay.
We would be shocked and angry with the club if they do not at least offer Davis and McGregor new contracts. Although both players are ageing, neither of them have shown they don’t deserve to be playing with the Gers next season with a series of superb displays this term.
Barisic is an interesting one because he’s a very good left-back who wouldn’t look out of place for a good team in one of the top leagues in Europe. As Adam says, it the price is right, he could be sold.
As for the rest of the players on Martin’s list, it would be a shame to see him go but we would be surprised if this isn’t Morelos’ final season at Ibrox.
He’s done well since his arrival from HJK Helsinki but his goals have dried up and his discipline has been a big issue.
Edmundson, Jones, Brandon Barker, Greg Stewart and Glenn Middleton haven’t done enough at Ibrox to suggest they deserve to stay. They’ll probably sold fairly easily for low prices in the summer or even this month before the January window closes.
In other Rangers news, the Gers ace could exit Ibrox today.
