Report: Rangers target refuses to sign new contract, will be available for free in summer

Rangers target Alfie Doughty will not be signing a new contract at Charlton Athletic, manager Lee Bowyer has revealed.

As reported by Sky Sports News journalist Anthony Joseph, Doughty will now enter the final months of his contract with the League One side.

Doughty will see his current contract expire in the summer and he is currently a man in demand.

Rangers and Celtic have both been heavily linked with a move for the winger, while Joseph adds Championship side Stoke have also made a bid for the player.

The Athletic recently reported that the Scottish duo were rivalling Premier League side Fulham for the winger’s signature.

Celtic and Rangers are free to speak to Doughty in an attempt to secure a pre-contract agreement with the wide midfielder.

He may not be a priority for Rangers

Doughty is certainly a player with potential and as a versatile option, he could add a lot of value to Steven Gerrard’s squad.

The problem that the Gers may face is the added competition from elsewhere.

Stoke have made the first move and launched an official bid to sign the player from Charlton this month.

Considering that he is out of contract in the summer, Charlton may jump at the chance to receive any kind of fee for the player.

Meanwhile, Celtic have also been long-term admirers of the player, with Rangers links only emerging in recent weeks.

Regular game time at Rangers is not guaranteed during the second half of the campaign and with Kai Kennedy now close to a new deal, there may be added competition next season too.
