‘Toughen him up’ – Exclusive: McLeish reacts to ‘Great’ Rangers transfer news for 19y/o

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has praised Rangers for giving their younger players the chance to go out on loan this season.

Josh McPake looks like the latest of the bunch to leave Ibrox, with a move to Harrogate Town in League Two on the cards.

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has reported that the 19-year-old is already with the English club, and has watched recent games before sealing his switch.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It will toughen him up, absolutely will toughen him up.

“It’s great for young players to go out on loan and play at a higher, senior-level because back in the day, we would play in the reserves and reserves were mostly guys your own age.”

Exactly what is needed.

McPake is certainly one to watch at Ibrox, and that was proven when Steven Gerrard handed him his senior debut at the age of only 17 two years ago.

The 19-year-old wasn’t enjoying the best of times at Morton during his first loan-spell this season, only claiming a single assist during his 461 minutes of action.

Gerrard will be keeping a close eye on the winger, and if he flops once again at Harrogate, there will be doubts over his long-term future at Ibrox.
