The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has chosen club captain James Tavernier as his Rangers player of 2020.
Writing for The Athletic, Campbell reviewed the year as a whole and, when looking for a standout Gers star, there really was only one contender, saying: “If Rangers are to end Celtic’s dominance they were always going to need someone to spearhead the resurgence.
“It has taken a while for his top form to coincide with a team at the same level as him but, so far, the right-back has stepped up to the plate.”
As the club see in the new year, Tavernier can look back on 2020 where he scored 17 goals and registered 17 assists across 43 games.
Tavernier’s numbers have been simply stunning as he looks to lead the Gers to no.55 during the second half of the season.
No complaints for Tav
You only need to look at the numbers to see how well Tavernier has done this season.
As Campbell alludes too in his column, you can disregard the penalties if you wish – he scored nine of them – but even if you do that, the numbers remain simply stunning.
As per Planet Football, the great Lionel Messi only scored 19 LaLiga goals during 2020 – so that highlights just how impressive Tavernier’s record is from right-back.
His form this season has really set Rangers apart with such a unique attacking threat. Ahead of Saturday’s Old Firm derby, he has 11 league goals and nine assists and will no doubt be hoping to improve on that at Ibrox.
Things have not always been easy for Tavernier at Rangers – so it is fitting that while he is enjoying some of the best football of his career, he looks set to guide the club to a historic and memorable league title.
