Steven Gerrard confirms Rangers injury blow, key man will miss three games

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield will miss the next two or three fixtures through injury.

The Canadian international was forced off in the win over Hibernian recently, after picking up a fresh ankle problem at Ibrox.

Arfield will now miss the Old Firm clash against Celtic, and potentially games with Aberdeen and Motherwell in a crucial batch of fixtures.

Speaking to the Herald after the win over St. Mirren on Wednesday, Gerrard confirmed the latest blow for Arfield and his fitness.

“The scan came back and we are just waiting on a few more opinions on it,” he said.

“We’ve had one opinion on it and he will obviously be missing in the short term. He will definitely be missing for a few weeks, that’s for sure.

“But in terms of the exact date or time, it’s very difficult right now. He will certainly miss the next two or three fixtures.”

Arfield has played a key role for the Bears this season.

The 32-year-old has made 20 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring four goals and assisting a further five from midfield.

Squad depth has been key this season for Gerrard, and he could also be without Ryan Jack for the foreseeable future at Ibrox – leaving him with a potential problem in midfield.

The experience of Jack and Arfield will be critical in this title run, but it looks like Glen Kamara and Steven Davis will be set to continue their run of starts together in January, starting with the Old Firm on Saturday.
