‘No sentiment’ – Steven Gerrard hints in-form Rangers stars could be dropped v Celtic
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has warned that the Gers’ in-form stars may not start against Celtic in this weekend’s Old Firm.
The Light Blues won 2-0 against St Mirren on Wednesday afternoon as Alfredo Morelos ended his Scottish Premiership goal drought.
Speaking to Rangers TV after the game, Gerrard said that there will be no sentiment in his team selection for this weekend’s derby and praised Ianis Hagi’s return to the side.
He said, “Ianis [Hagi] has come back into the team and he’s contributing really well. I’ve got some big decisions to make for the weekend but that’s where I want to be.
“But, I’ll pick a team that I think can do the job against Celtic, not really go on who scored in the last game or who’s in form.
“I need to pick a team that’s going to do the job against Celtic. There’ll be no sentiment. It’ll be a team that I think can get us three points.”
Hagi has impressed since he returned to the side after being dropped for a run of games earlier in the season.
The Romanian has picked up two goals and one assist in his last three Scottish Premiership games and he is certainly one of the Gers’ in-form players ahead of Saturday’s vital Old Firm.
With Morelos also getting back amongst the goals against St Mirren, the Colombian has made a decent case for himself just days before what could prove to be a season-defining game.
Morelos was poor in the first Old Firm of the season and Gerrard can’t risk starting a player who could be seen as a liability after picking up a two-game ban for violent conduct just a few weeks ago.
Rangers have a fantastic squad at the moment so whoever Gerrard picks will certainly give Celtic a good game.
If these in-form players are dropped then they could be very useful off the bench as the Gers look to pull even further away from their city rivals at the top of the table.
