‘Incredible’ – Exclusive: Alex McLeish reacts to Rangers-Ibrox update, claims ‘demand is there’

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has shared his excitement over Rangers’ plans to expand Ibrox, labelling the Bears support as “incredible.”

With Rangers approaching their 150th anniversary, John Bennett shared plans to develop the stadium after Edmiston House.

Ibrox currently holds just over 50,000, and the plans would see that significantly expanded – something which will help the Bears financially.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish joked, “It may be good for the social distancing.

“Listen, the Rangers support is incredible, as you know, not only here in Scotland but across the globe. They have quite an enormous following and the amount of people that will travel across the world just to see them in a certain game – that demand is there.

“How can a club like Rangers not make money? They are revered throughout, not only in Scotland but all over the globe.”

With fans not able to attend any matches as it stands due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would appear to be the perfect time to start works.

We wouldn’t expect any redevelopments to take place on Ibrox in the immediate future though, with Edmiston House the clear priority ahead of the anniversary in 2022.

McLeish is spot on, though.

Fans are coming from across the globe to watch Rangers, and making more seats available would only increase their following and their income.

The demand will always be there for tickets, and there would be little to effectively no risk should the board decide to bite the bullet and go ahead with the planned works.
